The Summer Fruit Bowl Candle Set
For anyone who's ever stood too long in front of a still life.
Blush or White Grape · Five pieces · Never goes off
I spent my childhood trailing my mum through historic homes, manor houses and castles. History was her passion, and art was the other: she left little drawings everywhere, an apple and a pair of glasses in the margins of every address book and notebook. We always found our way to the still lifes, a heaped bowl of fruit stopped by the painter at its ripest, forever. A tablescape so full of symbolism you could almost taste it. This is that idea brought to life. There are five fruits in one colour, at sizes that don't quite add up: a raspberry as big as a lychee, a banana in blush, a strawberry in buttercream. It's a painting you can rearrange, and light.
The lore
Fooling the birds. The ancient Greek painter Zeuxis is said to have painted grapes so real that birds flew down to peck at them. We're aiming for the same effect on dinner guests. Quick fact, we know at least one Apple Candle has been bitten!
Named for stillness. "Still life" comes from the Dutch stilleven, from the 17th-century golden age when painters made fruit bowls the height of fashion.
Read between the fruit. Those still life painters were rather racy in their day, they hid meanings in every bowl: love, temptation, sometimes the juiciest scandal. Those in the know, knew. Now you do too.
The colourways
Blush: a soft, dusty pink.
White Grape: the palest of yellow greens, softer in person than on screen.
What's in it, and what isn't
NZ beeswax and soy, coloured with German-made candle dye, with a cotton wick. That's the whole list: no fillers, no nasties. No fragrance either. Not "natural fragrance", not a "botanical blend". None. Just a warm. natural honey scent from the beeswax.
Give it for
A housewarming. A fruit bowl they'll never have to empty.
A host. The centrepiece that does the styling for you.
Anyone who's let a fruit bowl go off. We've all been there.
