The Strawberry Pair
For the big one and the little one.
Ripe red · Sculptural · Always in season
Everyone has a strawberry story, and the best ones are shared. Mine are dusty English fields full of laughter, being told off for eating more than I put in the punnet. Then, years later, my own children's first-ever fruit: stained red, chubby, delighted faces. So here's a big one and a little one, like me and mine.
The lore
A love token gone wrong. In Othello, the whole tragedy turns on one handkerchief embroidered with strawberries. One went missing, and Shakespeare took it from there.
Mother and child. Fifteenth-century painters seated the Virgin and child among wild strawberries, so the fruit has been on mothers' laps for five hundred years.
A fruit with a title. Since the 1300s, strawberry leaves have crowned the coronets of English dukes, marquesses and earls. In 1661 Charles II gave them to royal princes too. If it's good enough for them…
What's in it, and what isn't
NZ beeswax and soy, coloured with German-made candle dye, with a cotton wick. That's the whole list: no fillers, no nasties. No fragrance either. Not "natural fragrance", not a "botanical blend". None.
Give it for
A new parent. The first fruit, the first mess, the first photo.
The Mums Day. One for her, one for you.
A best friend. Matching, but make it fruit.
The details
The Giant Strawberry Candle: 13 cm long, 11 cm wide, 8.5 cm tall, approx. 480 g, approx. 20 hours
The Medium Strawberry Candle: 7.4 × 6.4 cm, 5.4 cm tall, 107 g, approx. 13 hours
