I grew up on the edge of the Fens, where my Nan believed in fairies. Not the Tinkerbell kind. The Fen kind: the ones you're wary of, admire and respect, and who sometimes leave something in return. My children have their own fairy pen pals now, a fairy door in their bedroom, and shelves full of the old stories. So here's a little ring of toadstools for the cake, from a 9 cm statement cap down to 4 cm sprites. Every cap is hand-painted, so no two mushrooms, or sets, are ever quite the same.
The lore
Mind the ring. In British folklore, a circle of toadstools marked where the fairies had danced. Step inside and you might not come out for years. Arrange accordingly.
The Fen folk. In the Fens they told of the Tiddy Mun, a spirit who ruled the waters and the mists. When floods reached the villages, people went out at night and called to him, and by morning the water had gone down. My Nan would have approved.
Not just Peter Rabbit. Beatrix Potter painted hundreds of fungi and wrote a scientific paper on their spores. It was read to the Linnean Society on 1 April 1897, by a man, because women weren't allowed to attend. No joke. They apologised in 1997.
What's in it, and what isn't
NZ beeswax and soy, coloured with German-made candle dye, with a cotton wick. The caps are hand-painted with a water-based varnish. That's the whole list: no fillers, no nasties. No fragrance either. Not "natural fragrance", not a "botanical blend". None.
Give it for
A fairy-mad birthday. Leave one out afterwards. Just in case.
A little naturalist. Beatrix would approve.
Anyone who could use some luck. Be nice to the fairies and they're nice back.
