The Fennel Candle
For anyone who's ever bought the fancy salad.
Pale green · Sculptural · Never wilts
This is English summer to me. It was grown in Chatteris, my Nan's village in the Fens, where you could sometimes find it running wild along the lanes. It's also the fronds scattered over the very fancy salads at Marks & Spencer. Cast from a real bulb, every rib and stalk intact.
The lore
On Midsummer Eve in Tudor London, every door was hung with birch, St John's wort, white lilies and long fennel, with lamps burning all through the night. It's said whatever was out there that night didn't get past the fennel. We'd still hang it.
What's in it, and what isn't
NZ beeswax and soy, coloured with German-made candle dye, with a cotton wick. That's the whole list: no fillers, no nasties. No fragrance either. Not "natural fragrance", not a "botanical blend". None.
Give it for
A housewarming. Doorway duty, since the 1500s.
A summer host. The centrepiece that never needs dressing.
A fresh start. New door, new rules.
The details
13.5 cm tall, 9 cm wide, 307 g
Approx. 3 hours. This one is a showpiece first. It burns with dramatic drips, so light it for an occasion and stand it on a dish.
Cast from a real fennel bulb and hand-finished in Auckland
Also in the Garden Pair, with the Avocado, for $219
