Hey there!

The Story of Fable

What if a candle could trick the eye? Be vibrant, playful, a little deceptive but... still do its job? And in doing so, steal all the attention at even the most raucous of dinner parties?

Better yet, what if looking at it unexpectedly pulled you right back to a moment in time? A specific place, a distinct feeling, or a person that always makes you laugh.

That is the idea behind Fable. Candles that surprise, delight, and don’t take themselves too seriously. At their core, these pieces are created to be fun.

The Fables Behind the Wax

I am Kathryn. I started making these food-inspired candles in 2020 while studying for my Meditation Teacher qualification during the depths of Covid. But working with wax and food actually goes much further back for me. It has been in my family for generations.

A fun fact: My great-nana served Queen Elizabeth II many times, and my great-great-grandfather was an actual wax worker. Bringing food and wax together felt oddly inevitable.

But beyond the history, I wanted a way to connect. To reach across oceans and lifetimes to the people I can’t see anymore, and to the places that shaped who I am, from Saudi Arabia and Cyprus to the rolling green fields of England. Every single piece we mold from nature has a real story attached to it:

  • The Granny Smith Apple: This one is for my late mum. She had this quiet magic where she could peel an entire Granny Smith with a tiny kitchen knife, pulling away one single, beautiful, unbroken ribbon of skin without snapping it once.

  • The Strawberry: For sweet English summers spent strawberry picking with my mum, nana, and great-nana. Four generations of women sitting in the sunshine, eating fruit, and laughing until our sides hurt.

  • The Sea Shells & Urchins: For my childhood afternoons exploring the shores of the Red Sea in Jeddah, and the pure joy of watching my own children hunt for treasures on Auckland beaches.

  • The Blueberries & Olives: For my son, who practically ate his own body weight in berries when we travelled through England, and my daughter, who can demolish an entire jar of olives in one sitting.

High Art. Still Life.

We take ordinary, everyday treasures and make them extraordinary. I wanted to take items that connect with the deepest part of our memories but look amazing, colourful and delightfully deceptive. These are beautiful, permanent wax sculptures for modern homes that love a little colour and a little magic. Each piece is designed to light up even the darkest of moments. Whether you are placing a flawless wax lemon on the counter of your newly bought dream home, or popping some strawberries on top of a birthday cake, you are sharing joy.

Welcome to my fables. What will yours be?

How The Candles Are Made

Display of fresh apples and pineapples at a grocery store produce section with a large window in the background showing pedestrians and vehicles outside.
A display of seven yellow lemon shaped candles on a wire rack, each with a green label tag that reads 'Scented Fable' and states they are made from natural soy wax and hand poured in New Zealand.

It usually starts out in a garden, or down at the markets, where I hunt out the most perfectly, imperfect fruits, veg, the ones with just the right curves and bumps. A good dimple gets me every time. My husband just shakes his head when he see’s me coming with a grocery bag!

We start with the real thing. That exact fruit or vegetable is cast in silicone, capturing every ridge and pore. No smoothing. No changes. What nature made, we keep.

Each candle is then poured by hand using our own blend of natural soy wax and New Zealand beeswax, and colour matched to look as close to the original as possible. Close enough to trick the eye. Just not close enough to eat!

Our candles are made using 100 percent soy wax, blended with sustainably sourced New Zealand beeswax.

When it comes to scent, we let beeswax do the work, supporting better indoor air quality and letting the candle speak for itself. All packaging is recyclable. Nothing extra, nothing unnecessary. We create pieces that feel thoughtful, responsible, and genuinely beautiful.

Our Purpose

My purpose is simple: for you to fall in love with with candles. Foodie candles. Candles that make the perfect gift. Candles that connect them to nature, to moments in time, and to themselves.

Everything we create is poured and finished by hand here in New Zealand, using natural soy and local beeswax. We even make our own moulds! We keep it clean, sustainable, and safe, you’ll find no hidden nasties, no shortcuts. Just colour, craft, and a little bit of alchemy.

At Fable Candles, wax is art, play is sacred, and delight is serious business.

From garden to object. Still life, reimagined.
